Boots Doubles Viewership In Week 2 Despite Pentagon Criticism

Netflix's new hit series Boots has become doubly successful in its second week on streaming. Based on Greg Cope White's memoir The Pink Marine, Boots follows a young gay man who joins the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1990s, recounting his experience hiding his sexuality in this environment. Created by Andy Parker, Boots stars Miles Heizer in the lead role. Boots was an instant success on Netflix following its premiere on October 9, and season 1 currently holds a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the series has drawn some notable criticism from the U.S. Government itself. Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson released a statement about Boots a week after it dropped on Netflix, denouncing it on behalf of the government. Wilson called the critically acclaimed show "woke garbage," saying that under the current administration, the "U.S. military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos." Wilson continues to say that the government's "standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn't care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight." However, the consensus is still that Boots is a smash hit among both audiences and critics. With Netflix having released the data from Boots' second week on the streaming platform, it is now the No. 2 Netflix show in the world. Additionally, while Boots was watched 4.7 million times in its first week, that number has doubled, as it got 9.4 million more views in its second week. Boots is currently second only to Monster: The Ed Gein Story on Netflix's global streaming charts for TV shows. Monster saw 9.5 million views this week. However, this is a decrease in viewership for the true crime series from last week, suggesting that Boots could overtake it next week, becoming the No. 1 Netflix show in the world. Boots is trailed by The Diplomat season 3 with 4.8 million views this past week, and Victoria Beckham: Limited series with 3.8 million views. Given where Boots was last week, either of these series could advance, but this could be while Boots' viewership numbers also continue to steadily rise, securing its top spot. Meanwhile, Boots is at No. 4 in the Top 10 TV Shows in the U.S. Today on Netflix, with The Diplomat at No. 1. This could signify that it is already slowing down following Netflix releasing new data yesterday (October 21), or that its success is best measured on a global stage. Yet it is still undeniably popular in the U.S. as well as worldwide.
