Blugold Marching Band preps for 100-year celebration

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – While getting ready for some football fun Saturday at their annual parade, UW-Eau Claire’s Blugold Marching Band continues to showcase their skills.
Getting the crown on their feet to celebrate the century long milestone.
As homecoming history unfolds, the marching band will hit the streets of Eau Claire to give everyone a full day of BNB beats.
Band director, Dr. Kara Metzger said “Some of the awesome things that we do is just provide experiences that are entertaining for people to listen to. We want to make sure that throughout the game there’s action or entertainment, even if a down isn’t being played.”
With more than 400 members, it’s kind of hard to not have live entertainment, especially since the marching band has been a staple in homecoming history.
Student conductor Dante Mulkey said “I mean our quantity is one of the bigger things that we’re known for, but I also think it boils down to community and connections.”
Mulkey and other members said being involved in such a large group sets a loud tone beyond the football field.
“We perform an exhibition at the end of the night for all the high schoolers, it’s good for recruitment but it’s also good just to like play our music, show who we are and have fun,” Mulkey said.
“So it’s really cool to share what we do with this community, as well as the high school marching band community,” Dr. Metzger said.
Mulkey added that this has personally helped him in connecting with others. “I’ve made countless friends that I never thought I’d be, like these people I probably would never be friends with had it not been for BNB. I love BNB, I love the connections. And I feel like that’s the core important part of just this band, but I feel like music entirely,” he said.
Dr. Metzger said she hopes students in the band “get the energy from everyone that comes to see them and kind of feels that camaraderie of like hey, we’re all in this together.”
Now everyone can get ready to see 100 years of BMB pumping up the crowd.
