He returns annually for his charity golf tournament and other events and enjoys the embrace the city still hugs him with for his legendary moment. “I’ve had the emotions for 32 years,” Carter said when asked how he was going to feel throwing out Saturday’s first pitch. “I get that wherever I go in Toronto. And I tell (people), I didn’t do it myself. I just happened to come up in that situation because I was the next guy in line. “What the fans have meant here and what they have done here, tonight is not going to be any different.” All these years later, what did the World Series-winning homer mean to Carter? There is the history and the enduring fame, of course. But for Carter, it’s also proof that dreams do come true in sports, sometimes on the biggest and grandest stages. “If meant that if you close your eyes and swing hard and hit a home run, they will love you for the rest of your life,” Carter said. “And not just here in Toronto. “What has really made my life complete is that you can go as far east as Nova Scotia and as far west as Vancouver and it’s all about the Blue Jays and it’s all about Canada. “And that has a warm place in my heart.”
