The Cincinnati Reds had a better season than anybody expected as they clinched a postseason berth in the final game of the season. But the Reds ended up getting bounced in the wild-card round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
As the offseason begins, the Reds are already finding themselves mixed up in trade rumors. Their ace, Hunter Greene, is buzzing as a name to watch on the trade block, but it might not make too much sense.
Still, the Reds could listen to offers for Greene if teams are going to be willing to pay a king’s ransom to land him.
Jackson Roberts of Sports Illustrated recently suggested the New York Mets could be a trade landing spot for Greene if the rumors have legs.
“New York has a young pitching core developing in Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat,” Roberts wrote. “But all three of those righties will be rookies next season, and only McLean is a lock to crack the opening day roster. Otherwise, it’s a rotation full of question marks.
“It’s harder to project who the Mets could trade to Cincinnati for Greene, seeing as most of their position players are either untouchable or too unproven to be counted on as contributors next season. But any team might have a tough time saying no to acquiring top shortstop prospect Jett Williams.”
At the end of the day, this idea doesn’t make any sense.
The Reds are pushing to contend, so trading their ace, who’s under team control for the next few years, doesn’t make any sense. If Roberts is insinuating that the Mets have untouchable players who couldn’t be moved in this deal, they would be better off trading for somebody else. Greene is one of the more valuable players in baseball, so a trade wouldn’t come easily.
