Black Queens bonuses brouhaha: Men and women should be paid equally – Kwakye Ofosu

Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has called for gender equality in athlete remuneration, insisting women deserve the same pay as men in sports. Speaking to Joy Sports amid the Black Queens’ protest over unpaid bonuses, the Abura Asebu-Kwamankese MP said gender should not determine how much athletes earn. “I think we need to treat all athletes equally, irrespective of gender,” he said. “I even hold the view, it may be controversial, but I think we should be paying equal wages to both men and women athletes.” The Black Queens trained on Monday after boycotting sessions for two days over unpaid bonuses following their bronze-winning campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Each player is reportedly owed $9,500. Kwakye Ofosu admitted that the delay in payments was unacceptable but assured that government efforts were underway to resolve the issue. “Delays are not desirable, of course, and I think we should take steps going forward to ensure that it does not recur,” he said. Following meetings with Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and senior officials, the Black Queens agreed to honour their second-leg qualifier against Egypt in Accra. Ghana lead 3-0 from the first leg and will be seeking to complete qualification for the 2026 WAFCON on Tuesday afternoon.
