Avian flu has been confirmed in six wild birds in Northamptonshire, according to government data. Figures issued by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) show four mute swans were found with the H5N1 virus, commonly known as bird flu, in Wellingborough. It was also detected in two Canada geese in the north of the county. The news follows reports on social media that the bodies of more than a dozen swans had been seen on the Embankment in the town over the weekend. MK Swan Rescue, a charity that promotes the welfare of waterfowl, said it was aware of the bird flu cases and described them as "heartbreaking".
