Just as the weather has begun to shift, viewers are now preparing for an autumn packed with addictive television. One under-the-radar BBC drama, which has returned for its second series, has already sparked conversation, and you can stream every episode on iPlayer right now. Dreaming Whilst Black is penned by Adjani Salmon , who also takes on a starring role in the programme as the main character, with the debut series launching in summer 2023. He portrays Kwabena, a filmmaker battling to turn his career aspirations into reality, never mind paying the bills. However, a fortuitous meeting with a fellow film school alumnus, Amy, motivates Kwabena to continue pursuing his ambitions, reports the Express . Their combined journeys shine a light on the dark realities of the filmmaking world , with Kwabena forced to confront racial prejudices ingrained in the industry. He also frequently escapes into daydreams, which deliver considerable entertainment throughout the show. While the series features well-written comedic moments, it also explores the film and television industry’s failings, especially when it comes to spotlighting underrepresented creatives. The show also features some brilliant guest appearances from Martina Laird, Roger Griffiths, Will Hislop, Alexander Owen, Jessica Hynes, and Peter Serafinowicz. When the inaugural series broadcast in 2023, it received abundant praise. One viewer posted on X: “If you haven’t caught Dreaming Whilst Black yet […] what’s keeping you? So fresh, so relevant. Bravo.” Another person commented: “I really liked ‘Dreaming Whilst Black’ lmao I hate [that] I just binge watched that like that.” An IMDb user raved: “Yes!! This is a terrific show! Dreaming Whilst Black’s first season secured two BAFTA TV Award nominations, with Salmon receiving a nod in the Male Performance in a Comedy and Scripted Comedy categories. Dreaming Whilst Black is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
