Billionaires' Bunker

Spanish sci-fi drama series about rich people trapped in a survival bunker

Certificate: 15

As the world teeters on the brink of catastrophe, one group of billionaires reckons they have the answer. Well, the answer for them at any rate. Abandoning society to global meltdown, they head to a vast luxury bunker to wait out the coming apocalypse. But can the families heading underground avoid a meltdown of their own as old feuds resurface, resentments simmer and claustrophobia sinks its fingers into them all?

Created by the team behind Money Heist, this Spanish sci-fi drama series is an enticing blend of Apple’s Silo with a kind of dystopian take on Dynasty, with the enclosed tension of the former rubbing shoulders with the conspicuous consumption of the latter. Often told with a soapy energy, its set-up provides a simmering petri dish of passion and conflict that occasionally feels a little like a reality show to watch.

Outside the bunker, the details of the mounting global conflict (seemingly between the West and Russia) provides stark contrast to the concerns of the bickering rich folk. Will they all make friends in the end – whatever the fate of the planet – or turn on each other and leave no-one standing? If you like the show at all, do watch to the end of the first episode before you decide whether to commit to the whole thing. (Eight episodes)
