The Vanagaram police have arrested a 22-year-old bike-taxi driver for allegedly raping a woman from Tripura after threatening her. The police said a 22-year-old woman from Tripura, living with her husband in Maduravoyal, lodged a complaint stating that she was allegedly raped by a bike taxi driver, who also threatened to kill her. According to the complaint, on last Sunday night, she booked a bike-taxi on a vehicle aggregator app to travel to Pallikaranai. After completing her work, she asked the driver to drop her back home, to which he agreed, telling her that he would wait. However, during her return journey on the bike in the early hours of Monday, the driver took a different route, led her to a dark and isolated area, grabbed her by the neck, threatened to kill her, and raped her. Based on her complaint filed at the Vanagaram Police Station, the police began an investigation and confirmed the veracity of the victim’s statement. Following this, a case was registered and the accused — Sivakumar of Odaipatti taluk in Theni district — was arrested. The two-wheeler used in the crime was seized. The accused was remanded in judicial custody.
