The Model Code of Conduct (MCC), a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for the conduct of political parties and candidates during elections, came into force after the announcement of poll dates earlier this week. The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections. This will remain in effect till the results are announced, on November 14 in Bihar’s case. As per the MCC guidelines set by the Election Commission, criticism of other parties when made shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. Parties and candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties. Furthermore, criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortions shall be avoided. Parties are also advised not to use communal or caste-based appeals for votes. The government cannot announce new projects or incentives that could attract voters. Violations can result in FIRs, campaigning restrictions, and even the postponement of elections. How To Report MCC Violations?
