Bid to turn former Glasgow bank into chicken shop refused over 'detrimental effect' to area

A bid to turn a former bank into a fast food chicken shop has been refused amid complaints over the number of takeaways in Cardonald. ChicKing, a global brand which began in Dubai, asked Glasgow City Council for permission to open a restaurant, with takeaway, in an old TSB building on Paisley Road West But the application — submitted by Foodfixx Ltd, which was granted the master franchise in Scotland — has now been refused as it would have resulted in an “overconcentration” of non-retail premises on the street. Council planners added the use would be “detrimental to the character and amenity of the surrounding area” due to “increased activity and the increased and unmitigated parking demand, cooking fumes and litter”. There were four objections to the scheme, with residents complaining about the number of takeaways in Cardonald. One resident said: “It is horrifying to see that a further hot food takeaway is planned for Cardonald. “This area does not need any further unhealthy food outlets, which lead to excessive litter, already a huge problem.” She added school children gather outside these takeaways, which encourage “an unhealthy lifestyle”. Another objector said: “I have no objection in principle to food outlets, but Cardonald in general, and that part of Paisley Road West in particular, already have many.” Plans described ChicKing as the “first fully Halal international quick service restaurant brand”, where food is made fresh to order. “Since securing the master franchise in July 2024, Foodfixx Ltd has demonstrated remarkable commercial growth,” a letter to the council added. However, planners said the proposed use “would result in an overconcentration of this non-retail use within this street block, at 31.82% or 7 out of 22 units”. A report added: “On balance, the likely detrimental impact to the character, appearance, amenity and viability of the principal retail function outweighs the potential positive contribution to the vitality of the Cardonald/Halfway local town centre and the surrounding suburban residential area. “There are no long-standing vacancies in this street block or in the wider town centre that would justify the need for this… use to be granted permission in this specific unit.” Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox
