Art imitated life for Beyond the Gates star Mike Manning this week. In a recent episode, his character Smitty Richardson, delivered a clever line that referenced Manning’s own reality TV past on MTV’s The Real World: D.C., a full circle moment that didn’t go unnoticed by fans. Manning shared an Instagram reel on October 30, 2025, highlighting the moment and reflecting on the meta connection between his own life and the characters storyline. The reel begins with a scene from Beyond the Gates, where Smitty (Manning) talks with his husband Martin (Brandon Claybon), about their daughter Samantha’s coming-of-age journey. “Teenagers do this thing, they push boundaries, they explore their sexuality,” Smitty says. “I mean we can’t pretend sex wasn’t in every song we listened to growing up, or in every season of The Real World.” After the clip, Manning appears on screen laughing, addressing viewers directly. “So whoever at Beyond the Gates who is responsible for this line making it into the show, that is hilarious,” he says. Manning went on to explain how the experience came full circle. “So back in 2010, I followed one of my best friends to a random audition for MTV’s The Real World,” he recalled. “I ended up getting on the show, Real World DC and it changed the trajectory of my entire life.” He added that early in his acting career, he was encouraged to distance himself from his reality TV past. “Then when I moved to Los Angeles I was told by my agent at the time don’t ever mention Real World again if you want to be taken as a serious actor, don’t talk about it, and so I didn’t, I never talked about it.” Manning said he now embraces that chapter of his life. “Now, here we are, all these years later, and on Beyond the Gates, whichever writer decided to incorporate that line into my characters dialogue is so funny. Art imitating life, it feels so meta, I don’t even know who it was or how you found out but well played that’s hilarious.” Later, Manning updated fans in the comments, sharing that writer Jazmen Darnell Brown was behind the clever nod. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 Fans React Fans took to Manning’s comment section to share their thoughts and support for the actor. Your agent might’ve told you not to talk about it but I can tell you that your journey on that show helped a lot of young people at the time.” A second fan wrote, “I had to laugh when they mentioned real world days. I was like that’s when I saw you and was like yup he will make it big one day” With a third user adding, “Loved the line, and I chuckled too, when I heard it. 😂 If I were that writer, I’d never reveal if it were me that wrote the line. 😁 Def well played.” Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams weeknights on Paramount+.
