There's always some sort of scam going around and this one impacts just about everyone that uses tap -to-pay, which is a lot of us these days. This scam has picked up so much steam that the Better Business Bureau is warning Minnesotans about it. You'll want to be extra cautious about this one since it could happen anywhere at any time. Recently, a new take on an email scam was going around Wisconsin. The Marquette County Sheriff's Office took to social media to warn people about it. Scammers used real names and addresses with this scam, making it appear real. Now, this scam has no warning signs so you really want to be aware. The Better Business Bureau Warns Consumers About New Scam It's never good when the BBB has to get involved! This scam is called 'ghost tapping' and while it seems like it would have to do with Halloween, it has nothing to do with the fun holiday. It is spooky, though! They do this when you tap your card or phone to pay for something. How The 'Ghost Tapping' Scam Works + What To Do About It Tap-to-pay allows your phone and the device charging you to exchange data at very close range and according to the BBB, this is usually very safe. However, scammers have found a way to take advantage of tap-to-pay when you are buying something in a crowded or chaotic place. You should also be cautious when buying something from a flea market or festival, as scammers set up fake stands. (Seriously, scammers have thought of everything.) The BBB also suggests looking out for charity scams, where a scammer might ask for a small donation but charge you for even more. You should also look out for scammers rushing you to make a payment. You may not want to check your bank account everyday (ha!) but you should, especially if you use mobile pay, to make sure you aren't a victim of this scam. This is extra important with the holidays coming up too.
