EXCLUSIVE: Newly launched Filipino production company Bente Productions is making its international debut here at Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) with a slate of projects headed by its first release, romantic drama I Remember You, starring JC Santos (Mallari) and Valeen Montenegro (Love. Die. Repeat).
The company is backed by microfinance organization CARD Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI), which has been providing microfinance and microinsurance to Filipino communities for four decades.
I Remember You, about a bank manager sent to Boracay to help a struggling community, embodies the kind of storytelling that the company is aiming for – authentic Filipino stories, rooted in community and inclusivity, that also have international potential. Directed by Boboy Yonzon, the film was released theatrically in the Philippines in July.
Upcoming films include family drama The Blind Chef (Kusinerang Bulag), also directed by Yonzon, and Letters For My Father (Sulat Para Kay Tatay), written by Eduardo Pacquiao, an emotional father-daughter story that reflects the realities of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).
The company is also working across different formats including docu-drama series Dreams (Pangandoy); songwriting competition series Look (Tan-awa), and education talk show Neighbors (Ka-nayon).
CARD MRI stepped into media and entertainment in 2022 with the SineMaya Community Film Festival (Cinema of the Sparrow), which has produced more than 30 short films showcasing untapped talent in Filipino communities. The success of that venture lead to the launch of Bente Productions in 2024.
“Filipino stories have a universality that transcends borders,” said Bente Productions President Marilyn Manila. “At Bente, we believe cinema is one of the most powerful ways to connect people – across islands, across generations, and across cultures. Our goal is to bring these voices to the screen with the same energy, artistry, and ambition as any major studio, while staying true to the heart of what makes them uniquely Filipino.”
Bente Productions is attending ACFM under the umbrella of the official Philippines delegation hosted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
