Bengaluru Traffic: Bengaluru’s crumbling civic infrastructure has once again come under sharp scrutiny after Biocon’s executive chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw joined the chorus demanding urgent action. Reacting to the announcement by trucking unicorn BlackBuck’s CEO to relocate from the city’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), Mazumdar-Shaw said on X, “Emergency measures needed to fix these issues”, tagging Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The appeal comes as growing frustration among residents and business leaders continues to mount over the state of Bengaluru’s roads, worsening congestion and prolonged commute times. We have decided to move out,” Yabaji wrote in a candid post on X. Explaining the decision, he added, “Average commute for my colleagues shot up to 1.5+ hrs (one way). Roads full of potholes and dust, coupled with the lowest intent to get them rectified. Didn’t see any of this changing in the next 5 years.” His comments resonated with several Bengalureans who echoed similar frustrations, pointing to the daily ordeal of pothole-ridden roads and endless traffic snarls. Mohandas Pai, chairman of Aarin Capital and Manipal Global Education, described the situation as a “big, big failure of governance in Bengaluru”. Tagging senior political leaders including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and civic authorities, Pai wrote, “Minister DKShivakumar, please see, cos are moving out of ORR. Situation beyond hope. Please intervene.” The rapid growth of Bengaluru as India’s IT capital has been marred by mounting strains on its infrastructure. Civic amenities, once overseen by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, are now under the charge of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. Local residents have repeatedly staged demonstrations to highlight their plight. Recently, citizens of Judicial Layout near Kanakapura Road placed potted plants in potholes as a symbolic protest, urging authorities to take notice. For many, BlackBuck’s decision serves as a wake-up call that the city’s global reputation as a tech hub could be at risk if civic issues remain unaddressed.
