Bengaluru Metro plans 72-km corridor with branch line to international sports complex

Bengaluru– Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is set to expand its largest proposed metro corridor by adding a branch line connecting the upcoming international sports complex in southeastern . The corridor, initially planned at 68 km from Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road to Kadugodi Tree Park near Whitefield, will now stretch to 72 km. Corridor route and stations The line will pass through Bannerghatta, Jigani, Attibele, Sarjapur, Dommasandra Circle, and Varthur Kodi, connecting major tech hubs. A 3.5–4 km spur will branch off after Jigani towards Anekal, providing direct metro access to the sports complex. Dedicated trains are planned for both the mainline and branch line. According to a BMRCL official, the line is expected to have over 50 stations, with stations spaced farther apart in developing regions such as SWIFT City, a 1,000-acre integrated township for startups and workshops in Sarjapur. The corridor will feature both underground and elevated stretches, making it a technically challenging project. International sports complex and DPR process The upcoming international sports complex in Surya City Phase 4 at Indlavadi in Anekal taluk will include an 80,000-capacity cricket stadium, facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports, and a 30,000-seater auditorium. The Housing Department has been tasked with preparing its detailed project report (DPR). BMRCL expects to submit the feasibility report for the 72-km line to the state government by October-end. Once approved, DPR preparation will begin, typically taking a year, with state and central clearances requiring up to two more years. Construction could start by 2029, with a timeline of five to ten years. Masterplan and future extensions The corridor is part of a 210.9-km masterplan being prepared under the direction of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The masterplan includes six extensions and two new lines, bringing Bengaluru’s planned metro network to 467.69 km, comparable to Delhi-NCR Metro’s planned 467 km. The addition of the branch line underscores Bengaluru’s effort to improve urban mobility and provide direct public transport connectivity to major infrastructure projects in the city’s southeastern corridor.
