Kannada Rajyotsava: Bengaluru is celebrating Kannada Rajyotsava today, Saturday, 1 November. This day marks the formation of the state of Karnataka in 1956. Earlier called Mysore, the state changed its name to Karnataka in 1973. Some old records say the name came from “Karnata”, while others believe it came from “Karu-nadu”, meaning “high land.” Today, Karnataka's growth in the fields of start-ups, the IT industry, and other prominent sectors has attracted global investment and recognition. Karnataka’s progress has deep roots in its rich history, which includes the brave freedom fight led by Rani Chennamma of Kittur, who took on the British decades before Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi. Why This Day Is Important Kannada Rajyotsava celebrates the day when all Kannada-speaking areas joined together to form one state — Karnataka.
