In a major step towards adopting cutting-edge technology, the West Bengal Police has set up a dedicated Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cell at the Police Directorate in Bhawani Bhawan, Kolkata. An official order issued recently stated that the initiative aims to promote the use of AI and other emerging technologies to enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery across the force. According to the order, the newly constituted AI Cell will focus on policy formulation, strategy development, and ethical implementation of AI-based systems within the organisation. Its key functions include: Policy Formulation and Strategy Development: The cell will formulate and periodically update the organisation’s AI strategy and implementation framework, recommending policies for the ethical, transparent, and accountable use of AI technologies. Identification and Implementation of AI Use Cases: It will identify specific functions, processes, and services where AI can improve efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making. The cell will also facilitate the design, development, and deployment of pilot AI projects in coordination with different branches of the police directorate. Capacity Building and Awareness: To strengthen technological capability within the force, the cell will organise training programmes, workshops, and seminars to improve AI literacy among officers and staff. It will also promote awareness about new tools, technologies, and best practices in AI. Research, Collaboration, and Partnerships: The AI Cell will collaborate with academic institutions, industry partners, startups, and government agencies working in the AI domain to foster research, innovation, and knowledge exchange. Data Management and Governance: It will also be responsible for formulating data management and security guidelines for AI-related initiatives, ensuring compliance with government standards on data privacy and cybersecurity. Monitoring and Evaluation: The cell will monitor ongoing AI projects, evaluate their outcomes, and submit periodic progress reports and recommendations to the competent authority. Sources told News18 that the AI Cell will be headed by an ADG-rank officer as chairperson, while an IG/DIG/SP-rank officer will serve as member secretary, overseeing coordination and documentation. Additionally, two experts in AI and data technologies will assist the cell, which may also co-opt external specialists and resource persons as needed. The cell will function under the administrative control of the Director General and Inspector General of Police, West Bengal, and will meet at least once every fortnight to review progress and approve new initiatives. A consolidated report on AI-related activities will be submitted every six months. Experts have welcomed the initiative, calling it a timely and essential move in the era of digital policing. They believe the adoption of responsible AI will not only help the police solve cases more efficiently but also play a vital role in crime prevention, awareness generation, and overall improvement of public safety mechanisms.
