Beloved Mass. ice cream stand shares ‘unexpected’ closure after 15 years

A beloved ice cream stand located just before Cape Cod has been “forced to close” after 15 years due to its landlord terminating the business’ lease, according to its owner. Perry’s Last Stand announced the “completely unexpected and extremely surprising” closure of its Wareham shop in a Facebook post on Sunday, Oct. 19. “After we had closed for the 2025 season, we received notification from our landlord (Bob Perry) that after 15 years our lease was not being renewed. This was completely unexpected and extremely surprising,” owner Jim Winterbottom wrote in the post. “We are truly saddened that we are being forced to close the ice cream shop that my mother started in 1992 and ran until she passed away in 2004,” Winterbottom wrote. “We feel that we have built on her legacy and we wished that we could have continued. However, this was completely out of our control.” Despite Perry’s Last Stand losing its Wareham storefront, the company plans to continue operating its fleet of ice trucks “in all the same towns and areas where we have operated historically,” according to the Facebook post. In addition, the trucks will accept any previously purchased gift certificates from the ice cream shop. “We would like to thank all of our employees, loyal customers, and friends who have supported us over the last 15 years,” Winterbottom wrote in the post. “We will continue to see you on our trucks again starting this Spring.” An old-school parlor with outdoor seating, Perry’s Last Stand was self-proclaimed as the only ice cream store with a drive-thru in the Wareham area. The shop was known for having more than 70 flavors of hard serve ice cream ranging from basic vanilla and chocolate to creative blends such as Salted Carmel Choc Covered Pretzel. Soft serve flavors included Creamsicle, Traditional Twist, Mocha and a rotating group of 16 additional options. Perry’s Last Stand also served the area’s only homemade snow cones in addition to offering a full food menu including sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, seafood and more. The address for the now permanently closed Perry’s Last Stand was 2704 Cranberry Highway, Wareham.
