R. Arthur James, Professor and Chair, Department of Marine Science, Bharathidasan University (BDU), has been presented the prestigious Tamil Nadu Government’s Scientist Award in Environmental Science for the year 2022 by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TANSA).
According to a BDU press release, the award was presented at a ceremony on Tuesday at the Resource Centre for Tribal Development in Udhagamandalam. The award carries a cash prize of ₹50,000 and a citation. The award was presented by Govi. Chezhiaan, Minister for Higher Education, and M. P. Saminathan, Minister for Tamil Development, Information and Publicity.
Prof. James’s pioneering research on natural nanomaterials particularly in the development of antibiotic agents for wound healing and food preservatives derived from extremophilic micro-organisms has had a significant societal impact. He also holds a patent for his invention of natural anti-corrosive pigments extracted from seaweeds found along the Tamil Nadu coastline.
BDU vice-chancellor committee convenor E. Sundaravalli, along with committee members V. Rajesh Kannan, R. Sakthi Krishnan, and registrar (in-charge) R. Kalidasan congratulated Prof. James.
