BBC issues update on Doctor Who after Disney+ leaves partnership

The BBC has insisted it remains "fully committed" to Doctor Who following confirmation that Disney+ is exiting its partnership with the programme. Disney had teamed up with the BBC on two series of the programme plus a forthcoming spin-off entitled The War Between The Land and the Sea, but will not be collaborating on the next run of the show. Nevertheless, confirming the future of the sci-fi favourite, the BBC has revealed that Doctor Who is set to make a comeback in 2026 for a Christmas special, which will be penned by Russell T Davies . The broadcaster also shared that plans for the next series of the programme - which starred Ncuti Gatwa as the latest Time Lord - will be announced in due course, reports Wales Online . Lindsay Salt, director of drama at the BBC, commented: "We'd like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. "The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026." "We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC," Salt continued. Sex Education star Ncuti was the most recent Doctor, the 15th incarnation of the character. He assumed control of the TARDIS in 2023. Earlier this year, the Doctor regenerated and Billie Piper stepped into the role. The actress is no stranger to the world of Doctor Who, having previously played the beloved companion Rose Tyler in 2005, alongside Christopher Eccleston's Time Lord. Now, it appears that Billie could be set to become the next Doctor Who, much to the anticipation of the show's fans. If true, she would be following in the groundbreaking footsteps of Jodie Whittaker, who was the first woman to portray the iconic character. Doctor Who airs on the BBC.
