D2: BCC DELIVERS IN POSTSEASON Bay City Central finished the regular season in solid fashion. And started the postseason the same way. After a challenging campaign, the Wolves are playing their best volleyball at the best time of the season. With a 25-23, 25-18, 25-7 victory over host Flint Carman-Ainsworth, they gave themselves a chance to play on in the Division 2 district tournament. “We had to find our groove,” Central coach Christine Davila said. “After the first set, we buckled down and started playing with more fight. We improved our communication and passing to keep more in system.” The Wolves have won just six matches all season, but they’ve come out on the plus side four times in their past six contests. Now they take on Flushing at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the district semifinal. Central notched 16 aces against Carman-Ainsworth, piling up the points with strong zone serving. Alayna Wrzesinski led the way with 10 kills, 11 digs and six aces while Brynn Corrion notched 27 assists. D2: GLENN ROLLS IN TOURNEY OPENER John Glenn had some tough luck in its final tune-up tournament. But it apparently did the trick. The Bobcats were ready to rock in the postseason opener, powering past Bridgeport 25-13, 25-5, 25-4 in the Division 2 district quarterfinal at Saginaw Swan Valley. They return at 5 p.m. Wednesday to take on Essexville Garber in the semifinal round. “Every player left it on the court,” Glenn coach Jessica Burley said. “From the first serve to the final point, the team celebrated every success and lifted each other up. That kind of chemistry is what a winning team is made of.” Glenn competed in the Aggie Invitational at Beal City for its final test, posting an 0-4 record. But the Bobcats show no ill effects, turning it on at tournament time. Glenn came out hot and never cooled off in the 3-0 sweep of Bridgeport. D3: ALL SAINTS SHINES UNDER PRESSURE Bay City All Saints didn’t win as many games as it would have liked this season. But the Cougars made sure the losses counted for something. In a season in which they competed in four five-set marathons, the Cougars looked battle-tested in the postseason opener. All Saints was on top of its game for a 25-7, 25-6, 25-6 victory over Saginaw Arts & Sciences in the Division 3 district quarterfinal at St. Charles. “The girls played great,” All Saints coach Katie Veihl said. “They served tough and were consistent all night.” Aymarie King led the Cougars with seven aces, Madelyn Olson notched five kills and Gali Costilla came through with 20 digs. Val Costilla directed the attack with 16 assists in the win. The Cougars move on to face Hemlock at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the district semifinal. D3: PINCONNING CAN’T CATCH A BREAK Bad luck followed Pinconning for much of the season, but the Spartans battled on and battled through. But a season of twists and turns came to an end as Beaverton topped Pinconning 25-15, 25-15, 25-9 in the Division 3 district quarterfinal at Breckenridge. Beaverton advances to face St. Louis at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinal round. Pinconning (7-24-3) already faced an uphill climb, then lost senior captain Liz VanHorn to injury two days before the playoffs. “Of course, we’re sad to see our season come to an end,” Pinconning coach Annie Powers said. “It just felt like things were starting to click for us, then losing Liz was something we just couldn’t fully overcome. “It’s been a season of adversity. We started the year without our setter and ended without our outside hitter. But these girls learned to be tough, to adapt, and to keep fighting through the hard times. I’m proud of the growth they’ve shown.” Setter Layla Foco posted 14 assists, seven digs and five kills in the finale for Pinconning. Adrienne Rau stepped up and notched 10 digs and four kills, Kailee Rugenstein tallied nine digs and five kills and Chloe Drouse added three kills.
