VOLLEYBALL: GLENN WINS 5-SET THRILLER
It looked like it was going to be a long night for John Glenn.
Until the Bobcats saw the light.
After a crushing loss in Game 1, the Bobcats found the gumption to turn things around, go the distance and outduel Saginaw Swan Valley in a stunning 14-25, 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 victory.
“This win was all about grit,” Glenn coach Jessica Burley said. “After that first set, the girls regrouped, refocused and showed what it means to fight for every point.”
The five-set thriller provided a big win for the Bobcats in Tri-Valley Conference Red action.
Lauryn Bitzer sparked the attack with a 24-kill performance at the net. Ava Arsenault came through with 23 assists while Journey Frasier highlighted the defense with six blocks.
VOLLEYBALL: PINCONNING HAS OFF NIGHT
Pinconning got caught in a rut and couldn’t escape, suffering a 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 loss to Farwell in Jack Pine Conference action.
“It was a rough night for us. We lost on our own mistakes,” Pinconning coach Annie Powers said. “The ups and downs of a young team can be difficult, but I feel confident we will have a much better showing at our home tournament this Saturday.”
Pinconning (4-9-3, 1-3) found a bright spot in Abby Grzegorczyk’s strong play at the net as she tallied six kills. Layla Foco dished 17 assists, Emma McQuarter tallied 12 digs and Liz VanHorn had nine digs and four kills.
SOCCER: BCW SCRAMBLES FOR VICTORY
It didn’t go according to plan, but Bay City Western found a way to win on the fly.
Rotating two field players to goalkeeper due to injury, the Warriors used a scrambled lineup to outduel Mount Pleasant for a 4-2 victory in Saginaw Valley League play.
“It was a really good game, hard-fought by both teams,” Western coach Kyle Jean said. “We had to shuffle some players around, but the boys fought hard and came out with the win.”
Hunter Kingsbury and Weston Carter scored first-half goals as Western battled to a 2-2 draw at halftime. Blake Wrzesinski and Luke Shotwell came through in the second half to put the Warriors over the top.
Wrzesinski and Shotwell each notched two assists for Western (12-3).
SOCCER: RARE AIR FOR PINCONNING
Pinconning seems to have turned a corner.
Just in time for the stretch run.
The Spartans scored a 7-1 victory over Shepherd, their second in a row in Jack Pine Conference play, reaching the six-win mark for the first time since 2012.
“The team is really beginning to work well together and seem to be hitting their stride at the right time of the year,” first-year coach Mike Stoneback said.
Pinconning (6-8, 5-4) saw six different players get in on the goal-scoring fun, including a two-goal effort from Tony Holstine. Landon Schumann tallied his first career goal and joined Ryan Kowalczyk, Hunter Groulx, Ashton Enciso and Quinton Schwerin with one score in the contest.
Trevin Billingsley, Bailey VanHorn, Landon Cooley and Remi Merithew led the defense that kept Shepherd in check while Lucas Stoneback notched the win in goal with seven saves.
SOCCER: STANDISH GETS PAYBACK WIN
Standish-Sterling scored an 8-0 victory over host Gladwin, staying on pace in the Jack Pine Conference title race and earning a measure of payback.
“We lost a really tough 1-0 game here last year, so it was nice to play so well and come away with the victory,” Standish coach Doug Dahn said. “The bus ride home is a lot more fun after a win.”
The Panthers (10-3, 7-1) set up a first-place clash with co-leader Ogemaw Heights at home on Oct. 1. The winner clinches at least a share of the league title.
Branton Bartlett registered seven saves in goal while Jacek Barwinski and Eli Steckert led the backline as Standish recorded its eighth shutout of the year.
Carson Koin led the attack with a hat trick while Arthur Viera Carvalho added two goals. Ben Briggs, Levi Cameron and Noah Begres came through with one goal each. Carvalho added a pair of assists while Briggs, Koin and Begres tallied one apiece.
