VOLLEYBALL: GARBER ROLLS PAST GLENN
Essexville Garber was attacking from all angles.
And that gave the Dukes a straight line to victory.
With an array of attacks, Garber overwhelmed host John Glenn for a 25-9, 25-12, 25-12 victory in their Tri-Valley Conference Red showdown.
“We were able to move the ball around offensively,” Garber coach Kim Kokaly said. “That definitely makes their blockers think and opens holes for us.”
An honorable mention in this week’s state rankings, Garber played up to its billing. Returning All-Stater Jeana Lenhard led the way, slamming 18 kills and five aces. Evie Engelhardt notched nine kills and five aces while Alivia MacDonald added five blocks.
Ella Kokaly came through with 26 assists and Kadyn Sautter tallied 13 digs in the victory.
VOLLEYBALL: PINCONNING BATTLES IN LOSS
Victory eluded Pinconning, but the Spartans kept it within sight.
Pinconning played four competitive sets with St. Louis before dropping a 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21 decision in Jack Pine Conference action.
“We competed hard and showed a lot of fight,” Pinconning coach Annie Powers said. “I like the way different players are stepping up and contributing. Every match we’re learning more about how to play together and push through close games.”
Pinconning (3-8-3) got a tough 13-dig performance from libero Emma McQuarter while Layla Foco notched 11 digs and 24 assists and Liz VanHorn added 11 digs and eight kills.
Ella Hunter came through with five kills and two blocks while Abby Grzegorczyk and Danic Jajo each added four kills.
SOCCER: STANDISH TURNS AWAY PINCONNING
Pinconning played like a vastly improved team but couldn’t hold off Standish-Sterling forever.
Standish-Sterling scored once in the first half then sealed the deal with two late goals for a 3-0 win over the Spartans, who they downed by a six-goal margin earlier in the season.
The Panthers (9-2, 6-1) remain in a tie for first with Ogemaw Heights in the Jack Pine Conference. Keeper Lucas Verdusco and center backs Ian Eman and Jacek Barwinski led the way to the team’s seventh shutout of the season.
Barwinski, Ben Briggs and Arthur Vieira Carvalho each scored a goal in the win while Carson Koin delivered three assists.
Pinconning (4-8, 3-4) shined defensively, fronted by Ryan Kowalczyk, Trevin Billingsley, Remi Merithew and Landon Cooley.
