Bay City schools plan to seek bond for critically needed renovations, technology upgrades

BAY CITY, MI – Local voters could decide on a newly proposed bond for Bay City Public Schools in the May 2026 election. During its meeting on Monday, Nov. 10, the Bay City Public Schools Board of Education voted 6-0 to approve a resolution authorizing Superintendent Grant Hegenauer to file a pre-qualifying application with the Michigan Department of Treasury for the bond proposal. Board President Joslyn Jamrog did not attend the meeting. In addition to signifying its intent to ask voters to decide on the proposed bond, filing the application will allow the district to finalize the details of the bond and begin preparing to draft and approve ballot language for the election on May 5, according to the resolution. If approved, the bond would fund a variety of critically needed capital improvement projects aimed at modernizing district facilities, while also enhancing student safety and security, according to district officials. The improvements would also support the district’s overall educational mission. Proposed bond projects include renovations to all the district’s school buildings. The renovations would feature the replacement of obsolete heating and ventilation systems as well as aging roofs. District officials also hope to use bond funds for classroom upgrades, from flooring replacement to instructional technology. District officials said more details will be revealed during the board of education’s upcoming meetings, which are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 and Jan. 12. The meetings will take place at Handy Middle School, located at 601 Blend St. in Bay City. Agendas for future board of education meetings will be available online at bcschools.net. Additionally, district officials plan to add a “bond transparency section” to the district’s website if the bond is approved.
