Barry Ferguson has revealed three players he wanted to sign for Rangers if given the chance – labelling one target the club missed out on a ‘no brainer.’ The former interim boss had some high points in the dugout including a victory over Jose Mourinho ‘s Fenerbahce and a first win at Celtic Park in five years. But ultimately their form wasn’t consistent enough under their former captain for the new owners to hand him a second crack of the whip with Russell Martin given the reins instead. The players they went on to sign in the summer have been a mixed bag so far – leading to a dreadful start to the season which has Martin on the brink already . They’ve spent almost £30million on new arrivals but most have struggled to make an impact in the early stages, and Ferguson has his own ideas on who should have been recruited instead. He said on Go Radio: “I’m a Rangers man, I’m desperate for Rangers to do well. Is it sore to watch? Of course it is. I want Rangers to be successful and start winning games. It’s been hard, it’s been a real tough start to the season.” When asked by host Paul Cooney if he’s free to talk about some of their proposed transfer business, he said: “I can say whatever you want, I’ve got nothing to hide.” Cooney then rhymed off three possible transfer targets – Lawrence Shankland, Josh Mulligan and former loanee Vaclav Cerny – and here’s what Ferguson had to say on each. Lawrence Shankland? “Of course, he was one of the ones who was on the list. You’re getting him on a free transfer. I don’t care about his age. He’s a proven goalscorer. He had a tough spell last year but every player goes through that. You give him the ball in the box, the man knows where the back of the net is.” Josh Mulligan? “Yes, there was a good opportunity. He was certainly another player who was on the radar. It’s different when you watch players on the TV. I had the privilege of watching some players close up and they stood out even more. I do think you need a certain type to play in the Scottish league.” Vaclav Cerny? “Yeah, no brainer.” Follow Record Sport on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond.
