Barcelona midfielder Gavi is set to undergo surgery on his injured meniscus after conservative treatments failed to resolve the problem, the club confirmed on Monday.
The 21-year-old has been sidelined since late August, struggling with the same knee in which he previously suffered a torn cruciate ligament and meniscus injury in 2023. The La Liga champions said he will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday to ensure a full and safe recovery.
“After attempting a conservation course of treatment and putting Gavi through intense sports stress tests on Sunday, the club has decided that surgery is necessary to guarantee the best possible return to competitive action,” Barcelona said in an official statement.
Gavi’s previous knee surgery in November 2023 kept him out for an entire year, highlighting the severity of the recurring injuries. The club has not yet specified a timeline for his return.
Barcelona also provided an update on Fermin Lopez, who featured for half an hour in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Getafe. Lopez suffered a muscular injury in his hip and is expected to be sidelined for around three weeks.
Gavi and Lopez join Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Balde, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen on Barcelona’s growing injury list, posing challenges for manager Xavi as the team balances domestic and European commitments.
The Catalan giants will now focus on rehabilitation and squad rotation while hoping to minimize the impact of these setbacks during a crucial stage of the season.
