BARBERS are being invited to a free training session designed to help them recognise, listen to, and support clients who may be struggling with their mental health. Between 2012 and 2021, 68% of all suicides recorded in Jersey involved men, figures which highlight the need for community based initiative. The training session will be delivered by award-winning barber, author, and educator Tom Chapman, who developed the BarberTalk training to supply barbers with the confidence and tools to have supportive conversations with clients, and enable professionals to break the stigma around men’s mental health. “Barbers are often confidants for their clients – they hear about people’s lives, challenges, and worries,” said Alfie, barber at KSG and co-founder of the Danny Cram Foundation, which was launched in honour of a 25-year-old Islander who his own life earlier this year. “This training helps barbers recognise when someone might be struggling and gives them the skills to start a supportive chat and to help them get the support they need. Together, we can make a real difference.” Training will be funded by the Government of Jersey’s Connect Me Grant Scheme, which aims to strengthen community wellbeing through everyday conversations. The session is due to take place on 24 November at St Paul’s Centre, and with limited spaces, barbers interested in attending are encouraged to register online via Eventbrite.
