Banks on wheels, Auburn’s ’26 opener: Down in Alabama

Banks on wheels, Auburn’s ’26 opener: Down in Alabama

Banking on the go
PNC Bank has brought a new venture to Birmingham: A mobile bank branch.
Tellers on wheels. Rolling financial service.
Hey, it’s worked for food.
AL.com’s William Thornton reports that PNC Bank’s mobile branch — operated out of a 30-foot truck — will allow folks to open accounts and to apply for loans, credit cards and mortgages. You know, the stuff you do at a traditional, brick-and-mortar bank branch.
PNC plans to rotate locations in Birmingham.
The bank already has used mobile branches in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland and Houston.
High-ranked School
A mobile magnet school ranks among the top 20 public schools in the nation on the 2026 Niche rankings, reports AL.com’s Patrick Darrington.
The Alabama School of Mathematics and Science landed at No. 19 on the list, making it the top public high school in Alabama.
In other Niche rankings, ASMS was Alabama’s best high school for STEM, Alabama’s best college prep public high school and Alabama’s best magnet high school.
‘Home’ game in Atlanta
Auburn’s 2026 football season opener has been moved from Jordan-Hare Stadium to Atlanta as the Aflac Kickoff Game, meaning there will be only six true home games next season, and that disappoints many fans, plenty of Auburn businesses, and even Auburn Mayor Ron Anders.
AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus reports that plenty of frustration was shared openly during a recent Auburn City Council meeting. Anders talked about the importance of home games to the city’s economy and how much local businesses count on them. And one council member responded with a “Shame on the university.”
On WNSP-FM’s “The Opening Kickoff” sports-talk show Wednesday, Auburn athletic director John Cohen acknowledged the frustration the move causes.
The decision was made, as so many decisions are, because of the money. But not just for the university.
A big part of this you can pin on NIL.
Said Cohen: “If you look at what we just did through the lens of five to 10 years ago, it probably doesn’t make much sense to anybody. If you look at it through the lens of 2025 and how important third-party NIL opportunities are for student-athletes, it’s really the only decision we could possibly make.”
On3 Sports reported that the move could mean $5 million in NIL opportunities for Auburn players.
Quoting
“If you live in America and practice Sharia Law, you should be DEPORTED IMMEDIATELY.”
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, on social media after he delivered a speech to the Senate in support of banning Sharia law.
By the Numbers
600
That’s the estimated number of volunteers still needed to help with the Madison County Special Olympics, which are in less than three weeks.
