Bank Holiday Alert! Chhath Puja, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti & More Festivities To Impact Banking Operations Next Week

As per the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official holiday calendar, banks in several states are gearing up for a five-day closure next week due to major national and regional celebrations, including Chhath Puja and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary. In addition, banks across India will remain closed on Sunday, November 2, 2025. According to the RBI's holiday calendar, bank holidays fall under three main categories. The first includes holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which cover national, state, and religious observances. The second category is RTGS Holidays, designated for the Real-Time Gross Settlement system. Although RTGS operates round the clock, the RBI outlines specific days for scheduled maintenance or official observance. Lastly, Banks’ Closing of Accounts refers to holidays set aside for finalising annual or half-yearly financial records, usually on April 1 and October 1. Chhath Puja Bank Closures Banks will remain shut on Monday, October 27, in Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi, and again on Tuesday, October 28, in Patna and Ranchi for Chhath Puja. This will result in an extended four-day break for banks in Patna and Ranchi when combined with the weekend holidays. Chhath Puja 2025, a festival dedicated to the Sun God, will be observed from October 25 to 28. The festival, popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Nepal, involves fasting, bathing in holy rivers, and offering prayers to the rising and setting sun as devotees seek blessings for good health, prosperity, and well-being. Bank Holiday for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Jayanti In Ahmedabad, banks will be closed on Friday, October 31, 2025, to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday. Patel, revered as the Iron Man of India, played a crucial role in unifying the country post-independence and served as India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister between 1947 and 1950. Regional Holidays: Kannada Rajyothsava and Igas Bagwal The start of November will bring more region-specific holidays. In Bengaluru, banks will not operate on Saturday, November 1, for Kannada Rajyothsava, which marks the formation of the state of Karnataka. Meanwhile, banks in Dehradun will also remain closed on the same day for Igas Bagwal, a traditional celebration observed 11 days after Diwali in Uttarakhand. The day, falling on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, signifies the end of Lord Vishnu’s four-month rest period and is considered auspicious for new beginnings. It is believed the festival began when locals rejoiced 11 days after hearing about Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya. Are Banks Open on November 1? While most of the country will see banks open on Saturday, November 1, as it is the first Saturday of the month, exceptions include Bengaluru and Dehradun due to regional observances. According to RBI norms, banks close on the second and fourth Saturdays each month and all Sundays, meaning nationwide closure will follow on Sunday, November 2, 2025. Banking Services During Holidays Even as physical branches stay closed, customers can continue to use online and mobile banking platforms for essential financial transactions, including fund transfers, bill payments, and balance checks.
