A Bangladeshi national was arrested for allegedly desecrating a deity's idol at a Bengaluru temple in Devarabisanahalli village, the police said on Wednesday (October 29). The 45-year-old man allegedly kicked the idol with his slippers at the temple. The locals and temple staff, after noticing the act, tied the accused, identified as Kabir Mondal, and thrashed him. The incident is said to have taken place on Tuesday morning. According to the police officials, the suspect was under the influence of alcohol when he entered the temple premises and desecrated one of the two idols placed outside the sanctum, PTI reported. The man was residing in Bengaluru illegally and working as a cobbler, the police said. The police are also verifying claims of locals about Mondal having shouted slogans of "Allahu Akbar". A case has been booked against unknown persons for having thrashed Mondal. The Whitefield Police said that a case has been registered at Marathahalli Police Station in connection with the incident and the accused has been arrested. The incident came to light when local devotees visited the temple to offer prayers. Many local vendors begin their business only after paying respects to the idol. As the vendors arrived, they found the idol damaged and desecrated. The police arrived at the spot and launched an investigation using the CCTV footage from the temple premises.
