The President of the Balearic government, Marga Prohens, in London this morning said that there had been a sea change in British tourism with a slight decrease in visitor numbers in high season and a big increase during September, October and November. “This is what we want,” said Prohens. Her government is looking to ease tourism overcrowding during the summer months, the main cause of the anti tourism protests of the last two years. She also said that culture and art would form a key part of their tourism strategy. She underlined the success of the Miro exhibition in London and said that this was all part of their future plan. Veteran tourism commentators may have to pinch themselves with Prohens' words, fewer tourists in the summer and culture and art rather than the sun and the beach. This is all part of the new Balearics. Mark Tanzier, President of the Association of British Travel Agents said that Mallorca was performing well in early holiday bookings. He received an award from the Calvia council after Magalluf hosted their annual convention.
