It’s been revealed that the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3 asked actors to come back into the studio to re-record lines of dialogue so they could include they/them pronouns. Baldur’s Gate 3 was released in 2023 by Larian Studios and is the most-recent game in the role-playing video series based on Dungeons & Dragons. It was celebrated as “the queerest game of all time” for its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters and storylines. The game also consisted of a largely LGBTQ+ cast, such as Karlach voice actor, Samantha Béart (she/they). It was named outstanding video game at the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards. The Gamer recently spoke to Baldur’s Gate 3 performance director Aliona Baranova about the game’s inclusivity, including the use of they/them pronouns. “I feel it was a game-changer when Larian decided that every single line that mentions pronouns would be recorded with the they/them option,” Baranova said. “We’d already started recording and we had a lot of lines down with just ‘he’ and ‘she’ pronouns but we brought people back in to make sure, even if it was just one line, to say ‘they/them’.” Voice actor Jennifer English praised Baldur’s Gate 3 for its work and advised other developers to take note. “You can take those risks, in inverted commas, and reap the rewards, if you do it from the heart,” English said. “Do it with good writing, good performances and direction, just be passionate about it.” Béart also spoke to The Gamer early this year, when they warned of a decline in LGBTQ+ storylines in games in the face of Donald Trump’s crackdown on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. “I know that’s happening, storylines have been cut,” Béart said, but added: “We will absolutely get through this together.” Share your thoughts!
