Balancing innovation and accountability in school safety

Every parent I know feels that deep unease each morning when they send their child to school. The rates of school shootings in this country are staggering. We’re haunted by the fear that we’re not doing enough to protect our kids — yet we also know we can’t wall them off from the world. The work ahead demands balance — innovation with care, and courage with accountability. We must use every tool available to keep our children safe, and we must use them responsibly, ensuring the safety of each and every child. Following the recent incident at Kenwood High School, Baltimore County Public Schools and the Baltimore County Police Department reviewed their response and reaffirmed their commitment to continuous improvement (“Baltimore calls for more AI oversight after county student falsely detained,” Oct. 28). Both agencies regularly conduct incident reviews and have already taken steps to strengthen training, communication and after-hours protocols. I commend both agencies for acting quickly, identifying lessons learned and reinforcing our shared focus on safety. We shouldn’t use this moment to reject technology or score political points. We should use it to strengthen trust, improve readiness and embrace responsible innovation — so every family can have the peace of mind they deserve. — Nick Stewart, Catonsville The letter writer is a Democratic candidate for Baltimore County executive.
