Sprout Organics is recalling baby puree pouches in the sweet potato apple spinach flavor because the product may contain elevated levels of lead, according to a news release from the FDA.
Exposure to lead, even at low levels, may increase blood lead levels, the FDA said. Signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead. The effects depend upon the amount and duration of exposure, age and body weight.
However, if a child is exposed to enough lead for an extended period, it can affect learning and development or cause other long-term health problems.
The recalled product is a 3.5-ounce pouch with lot code 4212 and expiration date of 10/29/2025. It was sold at Walgreens and some independent stores in the southern region of the United States mostly between September and December 2024.
If consumers have the recalled product, they should return it to their local store for a full refund. The lot code and expiration date are printed on the bottom strip on the back of the pouch.
No illnesses have been reported to date and no other Sprout Organics products are impacted by this voluntary recall. The recall is being initiated after routine sampling.
