AWS Outage Crashes Amazon, Fortnite, and Other Major Online Services

When you think of Amazon, what do you think of? Some of you might associate Amazon with its retail business, and some of you might think of its smart home Echo devices. But did you know that Amazon also has a cloud computing platform called Amazon Web Services (AWS) that powers a lot of the internet? This is why if you have been having issues connecting to Amazon, PrimeVideo, Fortnite, or Perplexity, it’s because of a recent AWS outage that led to the crashes of these sites and services. AWS crashes affect Fortnite and Amazon According to the AWS status page, Amazon has acknowledged the outage that led to crashes in online services and games like Fortnite and Perplexity. The first status update was made on October 20 at 12:11AM PDT. Amazon said, “We are investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region. We will provide another update in the next 30-45 minutes.” About two hours later, at 2:01AM PDT, Amazon updated the status where they identified the issue. “We have identified a potential root cause for error rates for the DynamoDB APIs in the US-EAST-1 Region. Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1. We are working on multiple parallel paths to accelerate recovery.” The company adds, “This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region. Global services or features that rely on US-EAST-1 endpoints such as IAM updates and DynamoDB Global tables may also be experiencing issues. During this time, customers may be unable to create or update Support Cases. We recommend customers continue to retry any failed requests. We will continue to provide updates as we have more information to share, or by 2:45 AM.” What now? Unfortunately, there’s really not much we can do now but wait. So far, the major services that have been affected by the AWS outage include Amazon itself, Prime Video, Fortnite, Clash of Clans, Clash Royal, Palworld, Snapchat, Perplexity, Canva, Roblox, Hulu, and Robinhood. There are probably a lot of other smaller sites and services that have also been affected. However, if you’ve been trying to access any of these services but can’t, it’s not you. Some services are gradually returning online, but others are still down at this time of writing. Hopefully it won’t take Amazon too long to get everything back up and running.
