James Cameron, who had expressed back in 2006 his interest in making Avatar sequels if the original film succeeded, officially announced the first two sequels in 2010 following the blockbuster success of Avatar (2009), with the then-untitled third film initially aiming for a 2015 release. The plan eventually expanded to four sequels, and the need to develop new technology for filming underwater performance-capture scenes, a feat never achieved before, led to significant delays, giving the team more time for writing, pre-production, and visual effects.
