The Transport Department is contemplating allowing training of two-wheeler driving at the new automated driving testing tracks set up in different parts of the State, including in Mangaluru, said Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy in Mangaluru on Thursday.
Talking to reporters, the Minister said new automated driving testing tracks have come up in Pajir in Mangaluru, Jnanabharti and Electronic City in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburagi, Dharwad, Hassan, Shivamogga. Belagavi and Raichur. More will come up in Vijayapura, Nagamangala, Ballari, Devanahalli, Kolar, Hospet, Gadag, Bidar, Yadgiri, Davangere, Sirsi, Yelahanka, Sakaleshpur, Puttur (in Dakshina Kannada), Madikeri, Madugiri and Hunsur.
Presently, the testing tracks are being used to train bus and other heavy vehicle drivers by providing lodging facilities for the trainees. “None were using the lodging facility in Mangaluru,” he said. The department will tie up with Skill Development Department to make more applicants use facility at Mangaluru and other centres.
The Minister said the principal of the Mangaluru centre has proposed introducing driving training for two-wheeler riders. “I asked him to place the proposal. Hope to open the facility for two-wheeler riders in Mangaluru from next year,” Mr. Reddy said. ‘
Asked about the hassles faced by applicants in getting a learner’s license online, Transport Commissioner A.M. Yogeesh said it was among the online services available under the Parivahan system of the Union Road Transport Department. Each of the six transport divisions has been asked to submit a report of the problems faced by applicants. It will be forwarded to the Union Department to address them, the official said.
In light of 34 services being offered online, Mr. Reddy ruled out setting up of a new Road Transport Office in Surathkal in Mangaluru.
The Minister said around 750 new e-buses were set to join the fleet of KSRTC and other State Road Transport Corporations, (SRTCs) in phases, in the next five months. Private transport companies will operate and maintain these buses, which will have conductors of the government.
Mr. Reddy said as many as 1,200 cases were booked against private operators for hiking bus fare during the Ganesha Chaturti festival. As SRTCs operate 2,300 additional buses from Bengaluru and other places, people will not face hardship with hike in prices during Dasara and Deepavali festivals, he said.
