The Australian women’s cricket team was fined 10 per cent of its match fee on Friday for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the second One Day International in Mullanpur (Chandigarh).
Australia experienced a 102-run defeat in the second ODI, marking their heaviest loss in terms of runs on Wednesday.
GS Lakshmi of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the penalty as Australia was found to be two overs short of the target after considering time allowances.
“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the ICC stated.
“Australia captain Alyssa Healy pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing,” the statement continued.
The charge was filed by on-field umpires Vrinda Rathi and Janani Narayanan, third umpire Lauren Agenbag, and fourth umpire Gayathri Venugopalan.
India is on the brink of making history as they prepare for the ODI series decider against Australia on Saturday. The hosts have never beaten the world champions in a bilateral ODI series, and a victory would not only achieve this milestone but also provide valuable momentum ahead of the World Cup starting on September 30.
After being outplayed in the first game, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side made a remarkable comeback with a stunning 102-run win in the second ODI — Australia’s heaviest defeat by runs. Smriti Mandhana excelled with her 12th century, while bowlers Renuka Thakur and Kranti Goud disrupted the top order. Arundhati Reddy also impressed as a third seam option. However, India’s fielding remains a major concern, with 10 dropped catches across two games.
With Jemimah Rodrigues sidelined due to illness, the middle order must offer stronger support to Mandhana. Players such as Harmanpreet, Harleen Deol, and Richa Ghosh will need to step up in the decisive match.
Australia, on the other hand, is determined to recover from their rare setback. Captain Alyssa Healy acknowledged her team was “outplayed,” but the return of opener Phoebe Litchfield should strengthen their line-up as they strive to regain dominance in challenging Indian conditions.
