The Austin Education Association stands in full support of the secretaries of Austin Public Schools as they engage in contract negotiations with the district. Our secretaries are the heartbeat of our schools. They are often the first faces to greet families each morning and the steady, dependable presence who ensures every day runs smoothly. They support teachers, administrators, students, and families in ways that keep our system running efficiently and compassionately. Their work is not only essential, but it also embodies the very commitments Austin Public Schools has made to all staff. The School District has clearly stated within its Daily Desired Experience promise that all staff should be seen, valued, and respected for who they are and the work they do; that they should receive the support and resources needed to do their jobs well; and that the district will adapt and change when necessary to meet the needs of its people and students. Now is the moment to honor that promise. By supporting a proposal rooted in fairness and equity, Austin Public Schools affirms the vision it has set for its workforce; a vision built on respect, equity, and collaboration. Moreover, supporting their proposal means supporting: • Retention and Continuity: Competitive pay and fair treatment help retain experienced secretaries whose institutional knowledge and relationships are invaluable to students, families, and staff. • Equity and Alignment: Secretaries deserve the same recognition for professionalism, flexibility, and innovation that the district promotes for all employees. A strong contract ensures their experience matches the district’s stated values. • Operational Strength: Secretaries are central to communication, organization, and the overall efficiency of our schools. When they are adequately supported, every department and classroom benefits. • Community Investment: Many of our secretaries live in Austin. Fair wages strengthen not just our schools, but our local economy and families. Every day, our secretaries live the values that define Austin Public Schools; collaboration, compassion, and commitment to students and community. A settlement that reflects their worth is not just an act of fairness; it’s a demonstration of integrity, consistency, and leadership by example. The Austin Education Association urges Austin Public Schools and School Board to settle this contract in a way that honors the work, humanity, and contributions of our secretaries. By doing so, we affirm that the values printed on our walls and shared in our mission statements are more than words, they are our practice. In Solidarity, Tom Compton President – Austin Education Association
