Her Majesty died on Friday aged 93. The Thai people will observe a one year mourning period to honour her lifelong dedication and contribution to the nation. The Tourism Authority of Thailand warned visitors while the country remained fully operational, public activities, events and business operations could be modified to reflect the national atmosphere of mourning throughout the next year. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced all government, state and schools would fly the national flag at half mast for 30 days, and government employees must wear mourning attire for one year. “Members of the public are encouraged to dress in black or subdued colours for 90 days as a gesture of remembrance and respect,” the prime minister said. While the government has not ordered any activities or events be suspended, organisers are expected to modify their formats and proceed with sensitivity. Visitors should be aware the Bureau of the Royal Household has temporarily closed the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram to visitors until November 8. The Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival will proceed as scheduled at Sukhothai Historical Park and a nightly candle-lighting tribute will take place at 9.21pm to honour the Queen Mother. “During this period, Thailand remains open and fully operational. All tourist attractions, transportation services, restaurants, shops, and events continue as usual,” a Tourism Authority of Thailand spokesman said. “Visitors are kindly requested to dress and behave respectfully, particularly when visiting temples, royal sites, or government premises.”
