Social media posts appearing to celebrate the killing of US political figure Charlie Kirk allegedly made by an Australian police employee have sparked an investigation.
The 31-year-old conservative activist and organiser was fatally shot on September 10 during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University.
A post made by the Facebook account being investigated referenced Kirk’s alleged assassin with the caption: ‘That dude has a steady hand’, along with a fist emoji.
Another post, seen by the Adelaide Advertiser, shared a news article about Kirk’s shooting and was still online as of Tuesday. ‘Amongst all Gaza, Ukraine, Trump news, sometimes something wonderful happens,’ the caption read.
A South Australia Police (SAPOL) spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Mail that the posts were being investigated under the Police Complaints and Disciplinary Act.
They would not confirm the employee’s role within South Australia Police nor share any details regarding the investigation.
In the wake of the shooting, the same profile also shared a widely-circulated video of Kirk speaking about gun violence.
‘I think it’s worth it to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights,’ Kirk said in the video. ‘That is a prudent deal. It is rational.’

South Australia Police said they are investigating an employee over social media posts allegedly made about the shooting
Tyler Robinson, 22, is suspected of having killed the political figure. He was arrested late Thursday following a 33-hour manhunt.
Kirk had a wife and two young children.
On Monday, FBI director Kash Patel told Fox News that DNA evidence found on a towel wrapped around the discarded rifle matches that of Robinson.
He also said additional DNA found on a screwdriver recovered on the roof of a building on the campus has been ‘positively processed’ for the suspect.
The rifle itself is currently being processed by federal authorities in Maryland.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said the 22-year-old alleged gunman would be formally charged on Tuesday. He remains in custody in Utah.
