Known for its digital photo frames, Aura has launched a new model, the Ink frame. This brings a color e-paper display, compared to Aura’s other LCD-based photo frames. The technology is similar to the Kindle Colorsoft e-reader. Aura notes that this shows photos that more closely resemble a printed picture than a digital screen. The Aura Ink photo frame features a color e-paper display The e-ink technology makes the Aura Ink frame go cordless, thereby making it ideal for hanging in your home. It features a 13.3-inch E Ink Spectra 6 display with 1600 X 1200 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. The Spectra 6 supports six colors, but Aura uses a dithering algorithm to create an illusion of millions of tones. It has paper-textured matting and a glossy finish for the image that’s on display. This, according to Aura, makes it appear like a classic frame rather than a piece of technology. You can position it in portrait or landscape orientation. It comes with the hardware for tabletop or wall mounting. It features a graphite frame with a white paper-like mat. Automatically transitions to a new photo overnight Since the Ink Frame uses e-paper, it’s not very power hungry. It’s claimed to offer up to three months of battery life before you need to charge again. It features a USB-C port, a status light, and button controls for navigating between photos. The Ink Frame can automatically transition to a new photo overnight if you don’t want to manually adjust the photos. The transition takes about 30 seconds. When rendering each photo, the frame rearranges millions of capsules, causing the screen to flash. But since this happens overnight, you’ll barely notice the flashing. The Ink uses motion and sensors to turn off the light when there’s no one around. This reduces its battery usage. You can choose to configure your own on/off schedule in the accompanying mobile app. It features a built-in front light that adjusts to the ambient lighting in the room and turns off in the dark. Price, availability Like Aura’s other frames, the Ink Frame supports uploading unlimited photos to Aura’s cloud service. If you’re an Aura user, you can also have your friends and family members send photos directly to the frame with the Aura app.
