The first of a three-year partnership between the Athletics and the city of Sacramento has proven to be challenging for a variety of reasons. Perhaps none has been as petty as the team’s refusal to acknowledge the city, insisting on being known simply as the Athletics until construction of their new stadium in Las Vegas is complete.
Excitement was high in the California state capital when the team announced in April 2024 that it would be coming to Sacramento. City officials believed it would be a great benefit. The limited capacity at Sutter Health Park, which holds a maximum of 14,000 fans, would help drive demand for tickets. This was Sacramento’s opportunity to demonstrate to league officials that the city should be considered as a potential location for future expansion.
The A’s revealed a new gold alternate uniform for the 2026 season on Sunday, which will indeed recognize Sacramento across the chest. This might just resolve some of the criticism the team has received for not already doing so.
“The new ‘Sacramento’ jersey is our way of…saying thank you for the fans, businesses and community leaders who helped bring Major League Baseball to town,” A’s president Marc Badain said in a news release.
The team will debut their new jerseys against the Houston Astros on April 4, 2026.
After calling Oakland home for 57 seasons, the A’s plan to move to Las Vegas in time for the start of the 2028 season. The team wore prominent ‘Visit Las Vegas’ patches on their uniforms this season, while Las Vegas advertising was added in several places at Sutter Health Park. The team will even play a six-game homestand next season at Las Vegas Ballpark, the home of their Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators.
The Athletics finished the 2025 season with a 76-84 record and in fourth place in the AL West.
