Athlete of the Week: Trinity Rodman's comeback propels Washington Spirit into postseason

As the regular season winds down, the is on a roll.
The team appears to be hitting its stride after returning one of its stars to the pitch.
“It’s been crazy,” Trinity Rodman told 7News Sports Anchor Natalie Spala. “It’s been different than what every other season has looked like for me.”
Up until August, the season had been a rocky road for Rodman. The Spirit’s star forward injured her back and had to endure a taxing, four-months-long rehab process.

“It was obviously hard not playing, fading away from the team and just like, not doing what I love,” she said. “It tested a lot on my mind, and I feel like I learned a lot about myself and just kind of what other people have experienced with injuries, because I obviously have seen it with other people, but I’ve never experienced it.”
Rodman recovered physically and mentally thanks to that hard work. She also gives credit to the people in her corner, including her boyfriend: tennis sensation Ben Shelton.
“He supported me going through it, because he saw every up and down of my emotions through that process and how much I’ve grown. He’s supported every single step of the way and every cry session I’ve had. He’s listened and he’s motivated me,” she said.
“My teammates have been so supportive, and the staff has been supportive of just my progression coming back, and how it has kind of been a climb with minutes and management,” Rodman added.
In Rodman’s return, she notched the game-winning goal coming off the bench. Now back in a starter’s role, she believes Washington is destined to make a deep run in the NWSL playoffs.
“We have so much depth on our team. We have so much interchange, and we have so many talented players. Now, it’s just getting that final piece,” Rodman said. “We’ve created 10, 20, 30 chances in a game. There should be more than one goal, so we all know that; and we’ve been working really hard, and hopefully that can all come together towards the end and during playoffs.”
