If you take one look at the Varsity Football Team, you won’t miss Carter Scruggs. The 6’6’’ 295-pound offensive lineman is a key piece of the Captains’ nearly perfect start to the season. “The whole offseason, we kind of knew that we were going to be a special group, and that we have the capability of doing special things,” Scruggs told 7News Sports Anchor Natalie Spala. “But yeah, I’m still a little surprised that we’re able to execute, so I’m really excited.” With Scruggs’ size and speed, the best teams in college football came calling. He received dozens of offers, but when one came from Clemson University, it was game over. “It’s probably the first time I cried over an offer. Like, it meant so much to me, because a lot of my family, my aunt and uncle, are die-hard Clemson fans,” he said. Next fall will mark the start of a new journey Scruggs hopes leads to the NFL. Keeping a positive attitude, he’s embracing the inevitable ebbs and flows that lie ahead. “Just challenging myself to my fullest abilities just to see what I’m capable of, because I know I could have a lot of potential and just seeing, you know, the hard work pays off,” he said. Before he trades in his navy blue and gold for that Clemson orange, Scruggs has unfinished business to see through with the Captains. “A region championship and hopefully, a state championship as well,” he said.
