At least 20 people are dead and 320 have been injured after a 6.2magnitude earthquake struck overnight. The quake hit in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, just months after another deadly tremor. The quake happened at at around 12.59am local time on Monday, 8.29pm on Sunday in the UK. Taliban Health Ministry spokesman Sharfat Zaman said the number of dead and injured might rise. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has issued an orange alert and said: "Significant casualties are likely and the disaster is potentially widespread". Balkh province spokesman Haji Zaid said the earthquake destroyed part of the city's holy shrine, the Blue Mosque. More than 1,400 people were killed and 3,250 injured in a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in the east of country eastern in September, which destroyted villages in the Mazar Dara valley Four large earthquakes hit the Herat province in 2023, each magnitude 6.3, killing at least 2,445 people.
