Asylum seeker who paid £400 to arrive in small boat stabbed man to death in bank queue

A failed asylum seeker who murdered a dad-of-three in broad daylight was "known to police" in four other countries when he arrived in the UK, a court heard. Somali national Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 48, stabbed Gurvinder Singh Johal to death in May. Nur, who paid 400 euros to travel to the UK last year, knifed restaurant owner Gurvinder, 37, in a branch of Lloyds Bank in Derby city centre as he Facetimed a friend while he joined the back of the queue. Prosecutor Louis Malby KC told the court that just before 2.30pm on May 6, Nur entered the bank and approached Gurvinder. He said: "There is no evidence of any prior link or interaction between them. "When in the bank he produced a knife and — suddenly and without provocation — he stabbed Mr Johal to the chest, leaving the knife protruding into his body and calmly left. Despite the best efforts of staff and others he was pronounced dead at the scene." Nur could be seen on multiple CCTV cameras attacking Gurvinder with a black-handled kitchen knife. He pleaded guilty to his murder in August. Derby Crown Court heard Nur had called charity Migrant Help less than two hours before the killing, saying he was “going to kill 500 people”, later suggesting he was going to target “doctors, police or people working at the Home Office”. He had claimed asylum in October last year shortly after arriving in the UK, which was rejected by the Home Office because he had arrived “voluntarily”, a decision he later appealed. Mr Malby said Nur also told Migrant Help he would go live on social media to “talk about how rubbish the UK is”. The court heard Nur was known to police in Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and Luxembourg when he arrived in the UK, including for offences such as assault and robbery. Mr Malby said Nur found a Somali friend in Derby who later told the police "the only time I didn't see him drinking was when he was asleep". He added: "A witness said they went to his address and saw the defendant was drinking vodka. "Throughout the morning, the defendant was calling a charity called Migrant Help and substantive calls were made later that day and what the defendant said to the volunteer on the phone was that he was locked out of his room. "He was crying and he felt he was 'living his life like an animal' and did not feel supported. He said no-one was helping him. As the call continued he became more erratic and at one stage he said he was going to end his own life by walking into traffic." Mr Malby told the court the charity called the ambulance service, who referred the matter to Derbyshire Police. He told the court Nur has previously had an argument in a bank and shouted '**** England' and called people 'white racists'. Three weeks before the murder, he walked into an electrical repair shop in Derby and handed over his mobile phone, complaining he could not access Facebook. He picked up a brick and smashed a window, the court was told. As chilling CCTV of the killing was played to the court, Gurvinder's distressed family members left the room in tears. Jailing Nur for life on Wednesday, Judge Shaun Smith KC told the defendant the murder was a “brutal and callous act”. He added: “It was a real-life horror film for everyone connected to Mr Johal and everyone who had the misfortune of witnessing your wicked act." The court heard Nur was born into a Somali tribe which "has a low social status" in the country and had witnessed his wife being murdered in "an honour killing" back home. He left the country, going first to Europe and then the UK in September, 2024. In a victim impact statement read to the court, Gurvinder's family said: "He was a rock, a shepherd, our angel on earth and his children say a monster took their daddy away. Every morning we wake up expecting to hear his footsteps but there is only silence. "His wife has lost her soulmate, partner, protector now and is now left to raise their children alone her life shattered her heart hollow. Our family is broken. "To the one who did this, we pray God shows you the same mercy you showed our son. May you and your soul never rest in peace.” For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here .
