ANIAssam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that Assam cabinet has decided prohibit polygamy in Assam and said that the government will table the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill 2025 in the forthcoming session of the assembly on November 25.The bill also has provision of seven years of imprisonment for those who practice polygamy and provision to compensate the victims of polygamy.The Chief Minister said that the bill will not be applied to scheduled tribe population tribal people of the state are however, kept out of the purview of the bill due to existing customary rules in tribal societies and that the bill will not be implemented in Sixth Schedule areas like BTAD, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong.The Chief Minister said that the objective is to eliminate practices of polygamy and polygamous marriage in the State of Assam except Sixth Scheduled Areas. "Polygamy is prohibited in respect of the person who shall not marry if he has a living spouse or is not legally separated from the other spouse by following due procedure of law or is a party to a marriage which is not yet dissolved or annulled by a decree of divorce," he said adding that the Bill further seeks to provide compensation to the victim women as they have to suffer immense pain and hardship due to polygamous marriage.
