The state of Assam has come together to mourn the loss of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg. The government had earlier declared a three-day state mourning following his death on September 19, 2025. Garg, who passed away at the age of 52 during a scuba diving activity in Singapore, left behind a legacy of timeless music. In a unique show of respect, major online food delivery and quick commerce platforms, including Swiggy, Zomato, and Blinkit, have temporarily halted their operations across Assam.
Food delivery platforms pause operations
Swiggy displayed the message, “Sorry! Restaurants aren’t accepting orders at the moment. Please check back later.” Zomato users saw a similar prompt: “Please check back in a while,” while Blinkit indicated its services were “currently unavailable.”
State observes three days of mourning
The Assam Chief Minister’s Office clarified that no official entertainment, ceremonial programs, or public celebrations would take place during the mourning period from September 20 to 22. Essential activities under the state’s ‘Sewa Saptah’ campaign would continue.
The CMO tweeted: “In loving memory of Assam’s eternal voice, Zubeen Garg. As a mark of respect, HCM Dr @himantabiswa has directed that State Mourning be declared from 20th to 22nd September 2025. During this period, all official entertainment, ceremonial programs and public celebrations will be in abeyance.”
It added, “Assam Government stands in solidarity with the people in mourning beloved Zubeen. His legacy will forever resonate in our hearts. Essential service activities under ‘Sewa Saptah’ will continue, while ceremonial or benefit-distribution events stand postponed.”
Zubeen Garg’s final journey
On Sunday morning, Zubeen’s mortal remains were transported from Guwahati airport to his home in Kahilipara. Thousands of mourners lined the streets to catch a last glimpse of the singer, showering flowers as the ambulance passed. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, accompanied the body, which exited the airport via the VIP route.
The body will remain at his Kahilipara residence for approximately 90 minutes, allowing family members, including his 85-year-old ailing father, to pay their final respects. Later, the remains will be taken to the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex, where the public can pay homage until 7 pm.
